From Times Staff Reports

The L.A. Bridges program should be retained in city middle schools because it has shown positive results in keeping young people away from street gangs, according to a report released Thursday.

The city-financed evaluation by the firm Vital Research found that suspensions decreased slightly, SAT test scores were up and participating students showed a 48% decrease in associations with criminal or gang peers.

“When we dedicate the resources, the personnel and the time our children deserve, we reap rewards,” said Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas, adding that the program is showing “remarkable results.”
