From Times Wire Reports

Lower Manhattan, ravaged by terrorist attacks, joined historic sites such as London’s St. George’s Church and Nigeria’s Benin City Walls on a list of the most imperiled treasures.

The World Monuments Fund expanded its watch list of 100 most endangered architectural sites in its new 2002 list to 101, to include historic downtown Manhattan.

The 1.5-square-mile area contains more than 65 landmarks, but is now threatened by the destruction of the World Trade Center’s twin towers and surrounding buildings in the Sept. 11 attacks, the New York-based group said.

Preservationist John Stubbs, a vice president at the World Monuments Fund, said it is inevitable that areas affected by the collapse of the twin towers will be rebuilt.
