Miami Regains No. 1 Ranking; UCLA at No. 4

After a one-week absence, Miami on Sunday regained the top spot in the Associated Press poll by virtue of its 49-27 victory over Florida State and Auburn’s 23-20 upset of Florida Saturday.

UCLA (5-0) climbed to No. 4 after handing Washington its first loss, 35-13. The Huskies (4-1) fell five spots to No. 15.

Florida (5-1) dropped from No. 1 to No. 7, opening the door for Miami (5-0), which is closely pursued by defending national champion Oklahoma (6-0).

The Sooners moved to No. 2 after defeating Kansas, 38-10, and Nebraska (7-0) inched up to No. 3. Oregon (6-0) and Virginia Tech (6-0) held at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

Miami had 48 first-place votes and 1,772 points and Oklahoma 21 first-place votes and 1,739 points. Nebraska had two first-place votes and 1,631 points and UCLA received its initial first-place vote of the season.

Fresno State (6-0) remained No. 8 following a 25-22 overtime victory at Colorado State. Texas moved up two spots to No. 9 and Michigan is No. 10.

In the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll, the top five were Miami, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Virginia Tech and Oregon.

Florida State’s streak of 14 consecutive top-five finishes in the AP poll is in jeopardy after the Seminoles (3-2) fell from No. 14 to No. 21. Also at risk is Florida State’s streak of 206 consecutive polls of being ranked in the top 25, dating to Sept. 17, 1989. That streak is the second longest, behind Nebraska’s 333.

In games played late Saturday night: Jason Thomas ran for one touchdown and threw for another as Nevada Las Vegas (2-3, 1-1 in the Mountain West Conference) beat San Diego State, 31-3, at Las Vegas. San Diego State (2-4, 1-1) had 160 total yards. Larry Ned, who averaged 154 yards per game and had scored eight touchdowns entering the game, was held to 46 yards in 17 carries. ... Matt Wright, Kelvin Millhouse and Robert Grant each returned interceptions for touchdowns for Hawaii (3-2, 2-2 in the Western Athletic Conference) in a 66-7 victory over Texas El Paso (2-4, 1-1) at Honolulu.

Fresno State defensive lineman Jason Stewart was diagnosed with a concussion after being taken to the hospital during the Bulldogs’ 25-22 overtime victory over Colorado State on Saturday night. Stewart fell and hit his head on the ground while chasing quarterback Bradlee Van Pelt on a 53-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. ... Virginia Tech defensive back Larry Austin and linebacker Jake Houseright had knee surgeries and are expected to sit out two to three weeks.
