Shirley Moore; Assistant to Reagan’s Chief of Staff

Shirley Moore, who served as administrative assistant to Deputy Chief of Staff Michael K. Deaver during the Reagan administration and was the traveling secretary to the president aboard Air Force One on numerous U.S. and overseas trips, died Oct. 4 after a lengthy illness at her home in Gold River, Calif. Family members would not divulge her age.

Beginning in the 1960s, the native of Oroville, Calif., worked for several Butte County officials before moving to Sacramento in 1968 and serving as administrative assistant to Gov. Ronald Reagan’s first health and welfare secretary, Lucian Vandegrift. In 1974, Moore became Reagan’s special secretary and later was administrative secretary to Assemblyman Bruce Nestande of Orange County.

Moore worked on Reagan’s presidential campaigns in 1976 and 1980, and after serving in the 1980 presidential transition office, joined the Reagan White House. She returned to California in 1984 to serve as personal assistant to Edwin W. Thomas, regional administrator of the U.S. General Services Administration. She retired in 1990.
