A ‘Racist’ Observation

Share

In the Calendar section piece on African American filmmakers Albert and Allen Hughes (“Brothers Grim and Stylish,” Oct. 17): I’ve heard and read a lot of ethnically charged statements before, but this one is extraordinary. Albert Hughes is quoted as saying, “The thing people forget is that the black culture is raised with white culture all around. It’s a lot easier for an ethnic filmmaker to do a white movie, because it’s all you see.”

That’s about one of the most racist and the stupidest statements I’ve ever read or heard. The only other one that competes with it is the one I read where an African American high school student was quoted as saying that racism was “invented” by white people. Racism is alive and well in America, and as evidenced by the Hughes quote, everyone has an opportunity to “invent” their own version of it.
