Neuheisel Focuses on the Run

Coach Rick Neuheisel is emphasizing two things this week for No. 13 Washington’s game at Arizona State on Saturday: Establish the run. Stop the run.

Washington (5-1, 3-1 in the Pacific 10) led the conference in rushing last year, but is averaging only 107.7 yards rushing this season. The Huskies had 83 yards rushing in Saturday’s last-second 31-28 victory over Arizona.

The Huskies are eighth in the Pac-10 in rushing defense, giving up 167 yards per game, and have allowed opposing running backs to run at will the last three games.

Georgia’s Fred Gibson is quickly becoming one of the top freshmen in college football.

“Fred can be as good as he wants to be,” Coach Mark Richt said. “He can be as good as anybody in the nation.”

Gibson showed that Saturday when he broke a 59-year-old school record with 201 yards receiving on nine catches. He scored two long touchdowns, helping No. 15 Georgia defeat Kentucky, 43-29.
