Airport Panel Agrees to Buy 28 Properties
The city’s Airport Commission voted Tuesday to follow through on its agreement to purchase 28 properties in Manchester Square for $15.5 million.
The commission had deferred the acquisitions after last month’s terrorist attacks, prompting concern among residents that the city agency that operates Los Angeles International Airport would back out of a voluntary buyout program in the area. The commission said it put the program on hold to reexamine its financial commitments.
Commissioners said the airport agency intends to follow through with plans to purchase all 568 properties in the 143-acre area bordered by Arbor Vitae Street on the north, just shy of Century Boulevard on the south, La Cienega Boulevard on the east and Aviation Boulevard on the west.
Residents who remain in the area, where homes have been demolished one by one over the last two years, were concerned they might be stranded in a neighborhood filled with empty houses and vacant lots ringed with a chain-link fence.
