Nazi War Crimes Suspect Appealing Extradition
Nazi war crimes suspect Konrads Kalejs was wheeled into the Federal Court of Australia on a stretcher for the beginning of his appeal against extradition to Latvia.
Kalejs, 88, is wanted in Latvia on charges of war crimes and genocide related to his role as a commander of a labor camp in World War II.
According to his lawyer, Kalejs suffers dementia. The judge excused Kalejs from attending the remainder of the appeal because of ill health.
Kalejs was released on bail in May after a court ruled in favor of extradition. He lives at a home for the elderly in suburban Melbourne.
