City to Purchase 75 Dual-Fuel Trash Trucks
Expanding a program that deploys more environmentally friendly vehicles, the Los Angeles City Council agreed Friday to buy 75 dual-fuel trash trucks. The purchase is made possible by a $1.5-million grant from the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee.
The trucks use 15% diesel and 85% clean-burning liquefied natural gas. The purchase follows a test program that has used 10 dual-fuel trucks. The goal is to eventually replace 400 of the city’s 600 trash trucks with natural-gas vehicles, said Drew Sones, a manager of the Sanitation Bureau.
“It extends our environmental consciousness to make a full commitment to clean the environment and air,” Sones said.
