FIRST QUARTER

Share

Arizona 10, USC 3

HOW THEY SCORED: * Arizona: Sean Keel, 24-yard field goal; 46 yards in seven plays at 11:27. * USC: David Davis, 33-yard field goal at 4:34; 31yards in nine plays. * Arizona: Michael Jolivette, 60-yard interception return at 1:35. PAT--Keel (kick).

THE TURNING POINT: Jolivette’s interception. It was the first critical turnover in a game that would have more than enough of them.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: D. Hale, the non-scholarship receiver given the start over Kareem Kelly, did not catch the one pass Carson Palmer threw his way. Kelly, who was held out because missed a practice, entered the game in the second quarter. Hale would catch a 15-yard pass from Palmer in the second half.

STAT WATCH: USC ran 26 offensive plays in the quarter, Arizona 14.

SECOND QUARTER

USC 31, Arizona 13

HOW THEY SCORED: * USC: Kevin Arbet, 70-yard interception return at 13:35. PAT--Davis (kick). * USC: Alex Holmes, one-yard pass reception from Palmer at 11:00; 12 yards in four plays. PAT--Davis (kick). * USC: Sunny Byrd, one-yard run at 5:43; 66 yards in 12 plays. PAT--Davis (kick). * USC: Kori Dickerson, 17 yard pass from Palmer at 0:32; 66 yards in five plays. PAT--Davis (kick). * Arizona: Keel, 46-yard field goal at 0:00; 41 yards in five plays.

THE TURNING POINT: Arbet’s interception got the Trojans even. But an interception by lineman Ormar Nazel, gathering in the Johnson pass that was tipped by linebacker Mike Pollard, set up the Trojans at the Wildcat 12-yard line to give USC momentum. Four plays later, USC scored the first of three consecutive touchdowns to take a big lead.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: On Arizona’s final drive of the half, 32 of the 41 yards came on two passes from quarterback Jason Johnson to receiver Malosi Leonard.

STAT WATCH: The running games were nonexistent. USC managed 31 rushing yards in 14 attempts. Arizona had minus-16 yards rushing in 16 attempts. Palmer completed 18 of 32 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns. Keary Colbert had four receptions for 51 yards. Byrd had 31 yards in 12 carries. Johnson, who sustained a concussion last week against Washington, was sacked four times. He did complete 10 of 21 passes for 173 yards.

THIRD QUARTER

USC 31, Arizona 27

HOW THEY SCORED: * Arizona: Clarence Farmer, 22-yard run at 7:43; 26 yards in two plays. PAT--Keel (kick). * Arizona: Brandon Marshall, 24-yard pass from Johnson at 3:47; 66 yards in seven plays. PAT--Keel (kick).

THE TURNING POINT: A 40-yard punt by Arizona’s Ramey Peru pinned USC on its two-yard line. The Trojans would have to punt from their end zone. Bobby Wade returned the kick 16 yards, setting up the Wildcats on USC’s 26 for the short touchdown drive that got their offense rolling.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Defensive lineman Bobby DeMars had USC’s third interception at the 12:42 mark. Of USC’s 12 interceptions this season, three are by interior linemen.

STAT WATCH: USC’s offense stayed in the locker room, totaling 35 yards in the quarter. Farmer, who had minus-4 yards rushing for Arizona in the first half, had 36 yards rushing in the quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER

USC 41, Arizona 34

HOW THEY SCORED: * USC: Davis, 47-yard field goal at 10:46; 51 yards in 10 plays. * Arizona: Johnson, nine-yard run at 7:05; 64 yards in nine plays. PAT--Keel (kick). * USC: Kris Richard, 58-yard interception return at 1:50. PAT--Davis (kick).

THE TURNING POINT: Are you kidding? If Richard doesn’t make his play, the teams might still be out there trying to decide the outcome.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Arizona might have lost a touchdown when Wade, on a punt return, was ruled out of bounds at the Trojan 47. Replays suggested Wade did not go out of bounds.

STAT WATCH: Palmer threw a season high 49 passes, completing 24 for 248 yards, and was sacked twice. Kelly wound up leading the Trojans in receiving with five catches for 64 yards. Byrd had 67 yards on 22 carries. Johnson completed 23 of 43 passes for 311 yards. He was sacked six times. Farmer, who ran for 134 yards last year against USC, finished with 78 in 17 carries.
