Choose Halloween Makeup Carefully

Kids--or their parents--often become artistic at Halloween, painting their faces with elaborate makeup that can rival members of the rock band KISS. But the tender skins of these budding Picassos might be sensitive or even allergic to the chemicals used in face paints.

To avoid problems, parents should select face paints carefully, keeping their children’s sensitivities in mind rather than grabbing any old thing off the store shelves, according to Dr. Rajani Katta, an assistant professor of dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

If their teenagers suffer from acne or have oily skin, for example, slathering on greasy makeup can exacerbate their problems. In this case, use a water-based makeup instead (ingredients are listed on the label). Conversely, products containing alcohol might burn sensitive skin.

Use only products designed for the face. Pens and glitter can add sparkle. But the ink or glue may be difficult to remove and require scrubbing sensitive skin.

Stick with products made in the U.S., which usually has stricter regulations about what’s permitted in makeup. And be cautious about using makeup with younger kids. They’re prone to rubbing their eyes, which could cause irritation.

And don’t leave makeup on overnight because that increases the chances of an adverse reaction. Cream and water-based paints can be easily washed off with soap and water, while grease paint can be removed using cold cream or baby oil. If your child develops a persistent rash, or if there is swelling around the lips or eyes, see your doctor immediately.
