Human Rights, One Life at a Time
I think Howard Morris (letter, Oct. 25) doesn’t get the point or doesn’t want to get the point. The point is simple in the question, “Would you bomb the whole country if there were terrorists in America?” One just does not lose one’s mind and start bombing all over Afghanistan and then say: “Sorry, my errant bombs killed the innocent civilians. I didn’t.” This is a childish, irresponsible attitude.
The United States claims to be on higher moral ground and at the same time just stands as a silent watcher when the wholesale slaughter of innocent civilians occurs as a result of its indiscriminate bombardment. One must claim full responsibility, and one should act upon it. The murder of one civilian anywhere in the world by the so-called errant bombs of the U.S. does not qualify the country to claim itself to be the “guardian of human rights.”
If a person cannot value one innocent life, there is no way to know that he or she will ever value more than one life.
