Police to Begin Collecting Racial Data
Police officials informed the City Council’s Public Safety Committee on Monday that they will begin collecting data this week to determine whether officers are engaging in racial profiling.
Starting Thursday, officers will be required to fill out a form citing the “apparent” age and race of people at all vehicle and pedestrian stops--as mandated under a federal consent decree. The objective, officials said, is to make sure that police officers are not targeting people based only on their ethnicity.
“The officers understand the program, and they are ready to go,” LAPD Capt. Mike Chambers said.
