Officials Face Deadline on Party Reimbursement

From Times Staff Reports

Three city planning commissioners and any other city officials who attended the St. Regis Hotel’s grand opening gala have less than two weeks to either pay back the full price of admission or make up the difference between that cost and the state gift limit.

The California Fair Political Practices Commission said local officials have until Sept. 10 to make reimbursements. Until then, the city may not decide on a beach access issue related to the hotel.

The party was held less than a week before the Planning Commission was to vote on whether to allow the hotel to cut a controversial path to the beach to make room for a tram service.

An initial estimate put the price of the event at roughly $500 per person.
