WWII Memorial Foes Get Their Day in Court
The U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington gave opponents of a World War II memorial on the National Mall another chance to stop construction, ordering arguments on claims that Congress illegally fast-tracked the project.
The court decided to give both sides 10 minutes each to debate whether legislators usurped the power of the court by passing a law designed to make the memorial exempt from existing statutes. President Bush signed the legislation on Memorial Day.
Supporters of the memorial said the opponents were trying anything they could to delay work on the project.
The case will be heard Sept. 12.
