Following SuitIs Not in the Cards

One of the attorneys representing Linda Will, Rashidi Wheeler’s mother, implied that his client had not come up with a dollar figure in her wrongful-death lawsuit against Northwestern because it’s not about the money.

“She has said she wants to make a difference in other athletes’ lives,” Randall Schwartz said. . “Sometimes the way to make a difference is with lawsuits.”

I couldn’t agree more. And because it’s not about the money, I feel Northwestern should not wait for the outcome of this lawsuit to make some desperately needed improvements:

No one with asthma should be allowed to play sports.

All athletes must have a fifth-grade reading level to identify the word “ephedrine” on any other NCAA-banned substance that appears on the label of supplements.

Any athlete who tests positive for a banned substance will be removed from the team and expelled from the university.

Upon dismissal, the athlete must repay the university the full amount of the scholarship he received (at Northwestern, that’s about $35,000 a year).

By implementing these changes, Northwestern could make a difference in other athletes’ lives. The university could also limit its liability, but that is secondary. After all, it’s not about the money.

This will advise you of my intention to proceed with legal action against the Los Angeles Times, its parent corporation, affiliates, officers, directors, employees and their extended families, heirs, successors, assigns, John Does 1 through 97 and everybody else in sight.

It has come to my attention that you have published numerous letters from the undersigned in the past. Although these letters were willingly submitted, their publication has caused irreparable damage to my reputation, due to their consistently sarcastic and irreverent nature.

My voluntary participation in the aforementioned matters in no way mitigates your culpability for having done your job. This action is being taken upon the advice of my legal counsel, Mr. Cochran, Esq., and my spiritual advisor, the Rev. Jackson, who have informed me that all blame rests with you, regardless of the fact that I willingly and knowingly involved myself in these incidents. I shall look forward to your prompt response.
