Working at Leisure

As the work-life boundary is increasingly breached, leisure time is becoming more stressful, a new survey finds.

More than 40% of those surveyed reported dealing with work or being on call during off hours. Still, workers don’t view cell phones and pagers as high-tech leashes.

More than half, and 66% of those younger than 35, view technological devices and the Internet as making leisure time more enjoyable, according to the telephone survey of 1,000 U.S. adults by Ipsos-Reid, a Canadian research firm.

Thirty percent said they use work time to handle personal matters with e-mail or on the Internet.

More than half of those surveyed (and 62% of those with jobs) said their leisure hours are packed with chores and obligations, making their time off work less relaxing.
