Judge Says Study of Gas Facility to Precede Sale

From Times Staff Reports

A gas storage facility near the controversial Playa Vista project must undergo an environmental assessment before the Gas Co. can sell it, a judge has ruled.

Opponents of the 1,087-acre development argue that not only would it endanger the Ballona wetlands but that leaking gas from the storage facility would jeopardize the thousands of people who would live and work in the development.

Gas storage facility--An “In Brief” item Wednesday incorrectly reported that the Gas Co. plans to sell a gas storage facility in Playa del Rey. The utility plans to sell vacant lots in the area, not the facility.

In June, the Los Angeles City Council approved $168 million in bonds to pay for infrastructure and housing at their project. Their decision was based in part on a report that indicated environmental hazards such as methane gas could be mitigated. The report also concluded that the Southern California gas reservoir was not leaking.
