Art Exhibit Will Honor Jewish High Holidays

To celebrate the Jewish High Holidays, the Forum Gallery next week will display the work of artist Mark Podwal.

Podwal’s “Legends and Visions: Art From the Jewish Experience,” will be on display from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from Wednesday through Oct. 13 at the gallery, 8069 Beverly Blvd.

The exhibit uses watercolors, gouaches and ink drawings that offer visual metaphors by fusing images of Jewish history, legend and folklore.

Podwal has written and illustrated numerous children’s books with such collaborators as Elie Wiesel and Jack Prelutsky.

California Lutheran University will host a photo exhibit and lecture on Palestinian history at 3 p.m. Sunday in Richter Hall in the Ahmanson Science Center, 60 W. Olsen Road, Thousand Oaks. The lecture, “What Palestinians Want/Need,” will be given by Edward G. Abington. The photo exhibit, “The Story of Palestinian History,” which features 50 photos depicting the Palestinian experience, will be on exhibit at the university’s Soiland Humanities Center through Sept. 30. * The Sisterhood of B’nai Tikvah congregation will host a Shabbat service with Rabbi Michael Beals at 6 p.m. Friday at 5820 W. Manchester Ave., Westchester. * Atheists United will hold its “Rational Day of Thought 2001” awards banquet at 6 p.m. today at Taix French Restaurant, 1911 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles. The banquet will recognize activists and citizens who have contributed to the promotion of atheism. * The Church in Ocean Park will host its third annual Community Awards at 6:30 p.m. today at 235 Hill St., Santa Monica. The awards will honor people whose personal and public lives contributed to the community. Award recipients include Vivian Rothstein, Pirkko Angelikis and Beth Lederpack. CONFERENCES
