Pinch-hitter Ben Petrick singled home the winning run in the 12th inning and the Colorado Rockies, despite Barry Bonds reaching base six times, defeated the San Francisco Giants, 3-2, Friday night at Denver.

Bonds, leading the majors with 60 home runs, went three for three with three walks. He hit a tying double in the eighth inning.

With 20 games remaining, Bonds needs 10 homers to tie the record of 70 set by Mark McGwire in 1998.

The Giants dropped a half-game behind the Dodgers in the NL wild-card race.

Brent Butler opened the Rockies’ 12th with a walk off Tim Worrell (2-3) and was sacrificed to second.

Aaron Fultz relieved and promptly threw a wild pitch, allowing Butler to reach third. Petrick followed with a sharp single to center.

Dan Miceli (2-5) faced one batter to earn the win.

The Giants threatened in the 11th, loading the bases with one out against Jay Powell. But pinch-hitter Damon Minor grounded into a double play.

Bonds walked in his first at-bat, then had a pair of singles. His double scored Rich Aurilia, who had walked.

Bonds walked again in the 10th and 12th.

Larry Walker and Todd Helton drove in runs, and Shawn Chacon pitched seven strong innings for the Rockies.

Chacon and Livan Hernandez staged a rare pitchers’ duel at Coors Field.

Chacon nursed a 2-1 lead into the eighth, when he walked Aurilia leading off the inning and was replaced by Mike Myers. Bonds tied it with a double but was stranded at second as Justin Speier retired the next three batters.

Juan Pierre and Alex Ochoa had consecutive singles to lead off the first. Although Ochoa was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a double, Pierre scored on Walker’s groundout.

San Francisco’s Pedro Feliz hit a solo homer in the fourth, his seventh.

San Diego 4, Arizona 3--Mike Colangelo, recalled from triple-A Portland last weekend, hit a solo homer in the eighth inning at Phoenix to lead the Padres over the struggling Diamondbacks.

Phil Nevin hit a two-run homer off Randy Johnson in the sixth inning as the Diamondbacks lost for the sixth time in seven games.

Johnson struck out 10 in six innings but failed for the second time against San Diego to get his 19th victory.

The Diamondbacks have lost six of seven and lead the second-place Dodgers by one game in the NL West.

Colangelo’s 417-foot shot off Greg Swindell (2-4) broke a 3-3 tie.

Jeremy Fikac (2-0) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Trevor Hoffman got the last out in the eighth and blanked the Diamondbacks in the ninth for his 26th consecutive save and 36th in 38 chances this season.

Johnson gave up three runs on seven hits in six innings and drove in Arizona’s first run with a bases-loaded single in the fourth, his second RBI and seventh hit of the season. He also walked four, one intentionally.

It was Johnson’s 22nd double-digit strikeout game this season, one shy of the major league record he shares with Nolan Ryan. He has struck out 336 and needs 47 strikeouts in his remaining four starts to match Ryan’s single-season record of 383 set in 1973.

The Diamondbacks’ runs came with two outs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Johnson’s string of 25 2/3 scoreless innings against the Padres ended in the third inning. Rickey Henderson led off with a walk, stole second, advanced to third when D’Angelo Jimenez lined a single off Johnson’s glove and scored when Nevin grounded into a double play.

Nevin’s homer put San Diego up 3-2, but Arizona tied it in the sixth when Craig Counsell doubled with two outs and scored on Jay Bell’s single.

Jones’ homer off Kyle Farnsworth (4-4) was his 30th this season and decided what began as a duel between Kerry Wood and Greg Maddux.

Maddux gave up only two hits in six innings, but one was a two-run homer in the fourth by Fred McGriff that landed on Waveland Avenue. Wood, who had been on the disabled list since Aug. 4 with tendinitis in his right shoulder, gave up two runs and five hits in six innings.

Steve Karsay (3-3) pitched the eighth, and John Smoltz worked the ninth for his sixth save. Atlanta, seeking its 10th consecutive division title, moved a season-high three games ahead of Philadelphia in the NL East.
