Senseless Development at Marina

Share

I found “Ebb Tide for Marina Offices” [Sept 4] to be quite timely.

Among all the senseless developments planned for the marina, it seems that Trammell Crow (yes, the same company tearing down the Shubert Theatre, mentioned on the same page), thinks that the appropriate place for a new “luxury” apartment building is smack in the middle of the area your article described--full of warehouses, auto repair shops, a dog kennel, an impound yard, countless small manufacturers and service businesses, and as mentioned, the various media and Internet-related companies.

Recently, my business neighbors and I, in a modest industrial park on Glencoe, were given eviction notices by our landlord. Then a friendly real estate guy came around offering nearby business property at double what we were paying, for 75% of the size of the space.

Your article’s report of declining rents notwithstanding, we are all scrambling to find comparable small industrial space at affordable rates. Some are having to move out of the area and take their jobs and services with them.

Even with all the planned development around here (mostly residential and retail, near the water) , you know this is not going to be the “affordable” housing the city keeps saying we need. How are people supposed to work near their homes when their workplaces are being eaten up by developers?
