From Times Wire Reports

Erin, the first named hurricane of the 2001 Atlantic season, appeared headed for Bermuda as it strengthened, causing officials there to issue a hurricane warning, forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

“What we’re looking at for Bermuda is nearly a direct hit. It’s going to be very close,” said meteorologist Hugh Cobb.

By 11 p.m. EDT, Erin’s maximum winds had reached nearly 85 mph with higher gusts. Erin was about 290 miles east-southeast of Bermuda. The hurricane was expected to strengthen during the next 24 hours, forecasters said.
