Don’t Miss LA Bridges
Re “Hours After School Are the Riskiest for Youths,” Sept. 4:
The UCLA study mentioned shows that extra homework and the enrichment opportunities of LA’s BEST are successful, as well as those of other groups mentioned. But let me urge public notice of the good things LA Bridges, at the middle-school level, is also doing.
Homework, snacks, sports, dance and music--an entire array of activities--as well as late buses home, if needed, offer great opportunities for students who really need support, supervision and incentives but are too grown up for baby-sitting. LA Bridges has lots of private support--Kaiser Permanente, Mann Theaters, DWP management employees, Universal Studios and others--and had City Council support from Jackie Goldberg and John Ferraro. Now at Le Conte, Washington Irving and Bancroft schools, the program works just fine.
