Giuliani Called Out the Best in Us

Share

New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani showed himself to be the level-headed voice of reason and calm. Giuliani was there to answer the questions and keep the information flowing. He called out the best in all of us and showed us the best in himself during the most horrendous of times. Our admiration is with the mayor, and with all the police, firefighters, medical personnel and civilian volunteers whose unselfishness and humanity in the face of disaster were witnessed by the world. Our thoughts and prayers are with all New Yorkers and with all who treasure freedom and democracy.

What should the nation do in the aftermath of these horrific events? Let’s do what the United States does best--create. Another building will stand in place of the World Trade Center. It will be even bigger. Its size and might will be a symbol of capitalism, freedom and American resolve. All this, of course, after we identify and blow the responsible parties to hell.

The day after the terrorist attack, I was working overtime at LAX operations. A co-worker inquired, “Do you think they’ll rebuild the World Trade Center?” I responded that no one would want to occupy that ground ever again. Then it hit me: what to do with the disaster area--build a memorial park and name it the WTC Peace Park, in honor of the victims and as a monument for our dreams of world peace.

Let us not construct new towers; let us feel surrounded by that spiritually charged space--its own architecture. For when the dust and debris of despair have settled into regenerative soil and memorial trees and benches proclaim the names of the dead, then may we look heavenward and know that this human catastrophe was, finally, redemptive as it deepens our faith and our hope in the caritas of poignant recollection.

The towers are gone, and many lives too. But something remains intact and stronger than ever: the American spirit and strength that built those towers remain.
