Man Dies in Leap From Bridge After Standoff
A man who held off police for more than 22 hours as he perched on the Gerald Desmond Bridge jumped to his death at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, authorities said.
The 30-year-old Huntington Beach man, whose name was not released, fell about 120 feet to the ground.
He had begun his standoff with Long Beach police about 10 p.m. Saturday.
Crisis negotiators talked to him throughout the night and day as he remained on the bridge, which connects the Long Beach and Terminal Island freeways, said Nancy Tabing, a police spokeswoman.
The bridge was shut down from both directions.
The man was apparently distraught over a relationship.
