27,000 Run to Defeat Breast Cancer
A runner from Flagstaff, Ariz., won the Komen Orange County Race for the Cure, which netted about $1.7 million Sunday for the fight against breast cancer.
Anna Brzezinska , 30, finished the 5K course around Newport Beach’s Fashion Island in 16 minutes and 28 seconds, said Kathy Kinane, a spokeswoman for the Orange County affiliate of the Dallas-based Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, which sponsored the annual event.
Naomi Wangui of Westchester, Pa., finished second and Sylvia Mosqueda of Los Angeles, third.
Kelly Flathers, 30, of Huntington Beach was the top Orange County runner, placing seventh, according to Kinane.
About 27,000 runners participated--about 20% more than last year. Organizers estimated the crowd at 10,000 people.
“It was fantastic,” Kinane said. “We had a great turnout and a record-breaking crowd. We are very pleased.”
About 75% of the funds raised, Kinane said, will go toward grants for Orange County patients who need treatments but can’t afford them. The rest of the money, she said, will be turned over to the national foundation to fund research.
