What: “The Best of Santa Anita 2001”

Where: Fox Sports Net, today, noon.

Santa Anita, with its state-of-the-art broadcast center, has produced a 100-minute videotape featuring highlights from the track’s winter/spring meeting and stories from the track’s past.

The sixth in a series, it is selling for $19.95 at the track’s gift shop and can also be ordered at www.santaanita.com .

As a promotion for the Oak Tree meeting that begins at the Arcadia track Wednesday, the show is being televised today. It’s worth watching or taping. Producers Amy Zimmerman and Michael Ewing did an excellent job of combining old and new footage and organizing it all.

The show, which has Kurt Hoover doing the brunt of the narration, starts with Dixie Union winning the Malibu Stakes on Dec. 26, the season’s opening day.

It concludes with Laffit Pincay, 54, winning his first winter/spring riding title since 1989.

In between are plenty of fascinating stories.

One is about Affirmed, the last Triple Crown winner who died in January at age 25.

Another is about Tiznow, the Sanita Anita Handicap winner and the 2000 Horse of the Year.

This story is mostly a tribute to Celicia Straub-Reubens, the co-owner who died of cancer three days after watching Tiznow score a Breeders’ Cup victory at Churchill Downs.
