Lt. Gov. Mark Schweiker, who is to finish departing Gov. Thomas J. Ridge’s term, said he doesn’t plan to run for the office next year.

Schweiker takes over Friday as governor, when Ridge resigns to lead President Bush’s new Office of Homeland Security. Schweiker will serve out the final 15 months of Ridge’s second term.

Schweiker, 48, told a GOP committee that he plans to honor commitments made to his family and state Atty. Gen. Mike Fisher, whom he endorsed for governor less than seven weeks ago, to not run for office in the near future.
