Rebel Leader to Make a Rare Appearance
The secretive leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam will make his first public appearance in 15 years next week to tell the rebels’ version of Sri Lanka’s 19-year-old separatist war, the group said.
Velupillai Prabhakaran, convicted in India for ordering the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, will hold a news conference in Sri Lanka’s northern jungle area Wednesday.
“Among other matters, he will address issues related to the ongoing Norwegian peace initiative in Sri Lanka,” said the statement, referring to Oslo’s efforts to start peace talks in May in Thailand.
