Clanton Gets an Easy Victory

Joey Clanton claimed his second consecutive American Speed Assn. victory of the season, running away with the TireRack.com 300 at Irwindale Speedway in front of an announced crowd of 4,222 at the track’s first Sunday race.

“Once in a lifetime you get a car like that,” Clanton said.

Clanton held off Gary St. Amant and Kevin Cywinski for a $21,166 first-place prize.

St. Amant was second and Cywinski third, with Reed Sorenson and Mike Cope rounding out the top five.

Clanton had lapped all but two cars, St. Amant and Cywinski, when a series-mandated competition caution flag, which comes after 100 laps of green-flag racing, was issued on lap 213.

But the field was set one last time when Tim Taylor, the only other leader of the race, slid into the wall on Turn 3. On the restart, St. Amant tried one last time to catch Clanton, but was not able to reel him in.
