Homeless shelters, food pantries and other nonprofit charities on the North Coast soon may be short of cash if they depend on the United Way for money.

The United Way of Sonoma-Mendocino-Lake faces an unprecedented fund-raising shortfall for its 2001 campaign year, said Yale Abrams, the agency’s president.

He said the agency expects to collect about $4.2 million this year, down 14% from the previous year and $1 million short of its goal.
