Baylor, Olowokandi Plan to Meet Today

Clipper General Manager Elgin Baylor is expected to meet with center Michael Olowokandi and his agent, Bill Duffy, today at an undisclosed Southland location.

Baylor is expecting to hear Olowokandi apologize for last week’s remarks about his lack of a contract for next season and its impact on the team’s recent play.

Meanwhile, Olowokandi and Duffy are expected to ask Baylor for a reduction in the $50,000 fine imposed on Olowokandi for his comments following the Clippers’ loss April 3 against the Utah Jazz.

“We didn’t play well together,” Olowokandi said after missing 13 of 15 shots in the loss to the Jazz, which effectively knocked the Clippers from playoff contention. “Whenever you have a group of guys that are very uncertain of their futures on the team that will always happen. Whenever you have that situation, you will never have a basketball team. Not this year, not next year, not 10 years from now.

“Things are very uncertain with the future of this team. It’s starting to affect the way we play the game.”

Baylor fined Olowokandi, eligible to become a restricted free agent this summer, two days later. They spoke for a few minutes in the locker room after the Clippers’ 22-point victory Sunday over the Denver Nuggets.

Baylor has indicated that he would like to re-sign Olowokandi, calling him an important part of the franchise’s future. Olowokandi has said he would like to remain a Clipper. Formal negotiations can begin July 1, with the signing period starting July 16.
