Spanish police have arrested a suspected member of the Al Qaeda terrorist network near the northeastern city of Barcelona, officials said.

“An Algerian man has been arrested in the town of Sant Joan Despi in relation with the financial branch of the Al Qaeda network,” a police spokesman said.

Interior Minister Mariano Rajoy said the man had links to the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in East Africa.

“This person was an aide of [Osama] bin Laden’s financial chief, a person who took a very active part, above all in the financing of the attacks,” he said on Spanish state radio.

Police confiscated documents and were questioning four French nationals who were at the man’s home, Rajoy said.
