From Times Wire Reports

Roseana Sarney, the Brazilian right’s main hope in October’s presidential election, said she was pulling out of the race and would run for the Senate instead.

Sarney had led President Fernando Henrique Cardoso in opinion polls for months. But her popularity dipped sharply after police raided her company and seized $570,000 and documents that could link the company to a major financial scandal.

Sarney, daughter of former President Jose Sarney, said the money was campaign contributions raised without her knowledge.
