Conservation District Legislation Signed

From Times Staff Reports

Gov. Gray Davis signed legislation Wednesday that will allow the Ventura County Board of Supervisors to seek voter approval for a land conservation district.

A citizens’ committee has been asked to hash out purchase guidelines and a recommended funding source before supervisors place the measure on the ballot.

Officials are aiming for the March 2004 primary. If approved, the open-space district would buy undeveloped land for permanent preservation. But voters would have to agree to tax themselves for purchases.
