Bus Strike Talks Focus on Health-Care Benefits
Labor negotiations resumed Thursday between striking school bus drivers and the Los Angeles Unified School District’s main transportation contractor, Laidlaw Education Services.
The talks focused on a health-care benefit package proposed by Teamsters Union Local 572.
“If we can get an agreement on health care, that would be dealing with the most expensive part of the contract,” said Don Owens, a Teamster spokesman. “That would free up more money to work on wages and the pension plan.”
The strike began April 2 and has been affecting about 20,000 students. Substitute drivers have been keeping service going on the strike-bound routes, but many youngsters have been getting to school an hour late.
