Orange County supervisors voted Tuesday to form an underground utility district to help a realignment project along Laguna Canyon Road.

Under rules established by the state Public Utilities Commission, utility lines are to be buried at the time of road construction.

The board’s action covers half a mile of Laguna Canyon Road from El Toro Road to the San Joaquin Hills Corridor. Cost for taking utilities underground is estimated at $600,000, a county spokesman said.

The board considered other utility projects, such as Pacific Coast Highway through Sunset Beach, but gave priority to Laguna Canyon Road. Construction is to begin in 2004.
