Two Teachers in Ventura County Win Awards
Carol Fujita has spent vacations studying flying beetles the size of a human fist. Craig Fox thinks it’s fun to create computer games that pose tricky transportation problems for would-be astronauts.
That kind of curiosity and an ability to excite young people about science have earned the two Ventura County educators top honors and $10,000 each from one of the world’s largest biotechnology companies.
“These two are wonderful teachers who know science, have motivated kids to learn and have taken their work to the next level by sharing their practices with other educators,” Amgen spokeswoman Barbara Bronson Gray said.
Fujita and Fox were two of five science teachers in the state who won the Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence.
Fujita teaches at Rio Mesa High School in Oxnard; Fox teaches at Redwood Middle School in Thousand Oaks. Both winners will receive the cash awards at a dinner planned at the California Science Center in Los Angeles on May 9.
