Get Your Kicks--and Some Exercise--on Route 66

Arizona’s Route 66 Fun Run takes place May 3 to 5 along 140 miles of the historic roadway, beginning in Seligman and ending at Topock/Golden Shores. Buses, bikes, RVs and classic cars are welcome on the caravan. Events at towns along the route include Native American dances, concerts and barbecues.

Missouri

Creole soldiers and costumed re-enactors will take part in the 10th annual Battle of Ft. San Carlos Commemoration on May 27 at Gateway Arch in St. Louis. This is the 222nd anniversary of the only Revolutionary War battle fought west of the Mississippi River.

New York

Fleet Week, May 22 to 28 at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum on Pier 86, will begin with a parade of ships up the Hudson River. Fireboats will create water displays, military planes will fly by in formation, the Coast Guard will simulate a helicopter rescue and military drill teams and marching bands will perform.

South Carolina

At the Spoleto Festival USA, from May 24 to June 9, more than 120 performances will light up churches, theaters and outdoor spaces all over Charleston. Highlights include a South African “Carmen,” North African hip-hop, Chinese comic opera and Japanese puppets.

Canada

The 50th annual Canadian Tulip Festival will bloom in Gatineau and Ottawa from May 3 to 20. The festival owes its start to the Dutch, who gave 100,000 tulip bulbs to Canadians to thank them for sheltering the royal family during World War II. Concerts, a canal flotilla, symposiums, fireworks and a photo exhibition are planned.

Hong Kong

At the Bun Festival on the island of Cheung Chau on May 19, bamboo towers studded with sweet buns and effigies of three gods will be raised near Pak Tai temple. Images of the gods are carried in sedan chairs, and young children in historic costumes are held aloft by concealed wires so they appear to be balancing on the point of a sword or the spout of a teapot.

Mexico

Puebla, less than two hours southeast of Mexico City, is the best place in the country to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. It was here, on May 5, 1862, that Mexican troops defeated French forces. Puebla celebrates with dances, street festivities and fireworks.
