Lee Maye, 67; Played Pro Baseball, Sang in Doo-Wop Groups

Lee Maye, 67, who had a 13-year career as a major league baseball player, mainly with the Milwaukee Braves, and also sang in doo-wop groups in Southern California, died July 17 of pancreatic cancer at Riverside Community Hospital.

A native of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Maye grew up in Los Angeles and attended Jefferson High School.

Maye began his major league career in 1959 playing in the Milwaukee Braves outfield that included Henry Aaron. He played with the Braves until 1965.

Maye later played for the Houston Astros, Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators and Chicago White Sox before retiring in 1971.

As a singer, he performed with two doo-wop groups: Arthur Lee Maye and the Crowns, and Country Boys & City Girls.

He was also a part of Johnny Otis’ vocal group, the Jayos.

After retiring from baseball, Maye worked for many years for Amtrak.

He made his last record for the Antell label in 1985.
