Lisa Leslie dunks!

(Oh, by the way, the Sparks lost.)

Is this really progress for the WNBA? Now its players too can toss up wild three-point shots and throw it down just like the guys and forget about basketball fundamentals. Not an improvement in my book.

Tuesday night Lisa Leslie became the first woman to dunk in a professional basketball game. This is history, folks.

When I got up Wednesday morning I immediately sought out the sports page, knowing that there would be a huge picture of Leslie dunking. I just knew it would be on the front page, above the fold. But no. History was recorded in a wee picture below the fold with a story on D3.

It’s no wonder the WNBA is struggling with attendance. When our own home team paper does not give them the attention they deserve, why should anyone else?

I am totally convinced that the sportswriters of America will never give women’s basketball, or any women’s sport, proper attention for one simple reason: They have a very hard time admitting that a female can play a game better than they can.

I have coached both boys’ and girls’ basketball at the high school varsity level and I can honestly say that I enjoy working with the girls much more than I ever did the boys and here’s why:

Girls want to learn how to play the game, boys want to be an ESPN “SportsCenter” highlight.

You mean to tell me that I have been paying no attention to women’s basketball all these years, and during that time they weren’t dunking?
