Army Raid on Rebel Camp Kills 15 Guerrillas, Nepal Says
Government soldiers raided a Maoist rebel base in eastern Nepal on Saturday, killing at least 15 guerrillas--including eight female fighters, officials said.
One soldier was wounded in the ensuing gun battle, and two civilians were injured in the cross-fire, government spokesman Bhupendra Prasad Poudel said.
The Maoist camp was near the village of Shailejguswor in Dolkha district, about 75 miles east of Katmandu, the capital, officials said. State-run television aired army footage of the slain rebels.
On Thursday, 12 rebels were reported killed in an attack at a rebel camp in the jungle near Rajkot village, about 310 miles west of Katmandu. Casualty reports could not be independently verified because gun battles often occur in remote areas closed by authorities.
Rebels began fighting government forces in 1996 in a bid to abolish the constitutional monarchy.
