20 Bodies Recovered After Ferry Accident

Searchers recovered 20 bodies from a stretch of the Yangtze River in southwest China where a ferry accident this month left 22 people missing, the official New China News Agency said today.

The boat was carrying 40 people in Sichuan province when it collided with a barge and sank Aug. 2, the agency said. Three people died at the scene and 15 survived. The rescue effort involved more than 380 people and 120 boats searching more than 112 miles of the river for the missing, the agency said.

The government and insurance firms paid victims’ families a total of $27,000 in compensation.
