A Day of Unbeatens at Saratoga

Share

Besides being 2-year-old fillies, five of the six entrants in today’s $150,000 Adirondack Stakes at Saratoga have something else in common.

They all enter the Grade II unbeaten. Only Crimson And Roses, who was a distant fourth in the Schuylerville on the first day of the meet at Saratoga, has experienced the agony of defeat and she has lost three times.

Holiday Runner has the most experience of the rest as she has won all three of her races for owner S J Bee Stable and trainer Wayne Lukas. A daughter of Meadowlake bought for a mere $35,000 at Keeneland about a year ago, Holiday Runner has won at three different tracks. She broke her maiden at Keeneland, won the Three Chimneys Juvenile on the Kentucky Derby undercard at Churchill Downs, then held on to win the Fashion at Belmont Park as the 3-10 favorite.

Perfect in two races, Awesome Humor will make her first start for Elliott Walden after being bought privately by Winstar Farm after her second win. Like Holiday Runner, she earned her first victory at Keeneland, then went to Churchill and took the Debutante. Pat Day, who became the sport’s all-time leading money earner among jockeys, has the mount on the Distorted Humor filly.

The other unbeatens all enter the 6 1/2 furlong race 1-0. Ella Bella graduated at Belmont Park last month, Stellar won her first start at Saratoga on July 28 and Just Call Me Angel tallied on a sloppy track at Laurel on July 26.

Race of the day: Trainer Bob Baffert will seek his third win in the last seven years in today’s $100,000 Real Good Deal Stakes. The seven-furlong race is restricted to 3-year-olds bred in California, and Baffert will be represented by 5-2 morning-line choice Modernist.

Who’s hot: Gamblin Town. The 4-year-old Town Caper filly has won four of her last five--her loss came by a head on June 21 at Hollywood Park--and she’ll try for another victory as she steps up in class in today’s second at Del Mar.

Who’s not: Racing in Northern California. The quality is worse than normal at both the Bay Meadows Fair and Ferndale.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Like Magic and Gamblin Town in the first, using Sonoita, Reluctant Hero and Sunday In Moscow in the second and singling Daisyago in the third.
