Secession Advocates Just Want to Bust Up the City

Re “Angelyne Moves From Billboard to the Ballot,” Aug. 10: As a resident living just south of Melrose Avenue, I have narrowly escaped the trap of the boundaries of the proposed new Hollywood city. However, I am stunned that of the 20 or so candidates who have come out of the woodwork to run for City Council seats, the only one with any name recognition is Angelyne, the scary sex kitten whose image has been hovering over the streets of Los Angeles for almost two decades.

Secession advocates argue that Hollywood is a seedy shadow of its former self, and Angelyne, the self-proclaimed “image of Hollywood,” says she wants to see a new Hollywood city that will “rise to [her] occasion.” I wasn’t worried about our image at all until I learned of the grand vision of a woman whose notoriety is based solely on appearing half-naked on airbrushed billboards.

People hiding behind clown makeup have always frightened me; let’s keep the clowns in the circus and leave the administration of our city to people with a vision that exceeds the depths of Angelyne’s cleavage.

How dare Jeffrey Daar, president of the Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley, claim to speak for all Democrats in the San Fernando Valley (“Democrats Won’t Help Valley City Candidates,” Aug. 9)? I have been a Democrat since I have been able to register and vote, well over 37 years, and as an 18-year resident of the San Fernando Valley I support secession--and I will support any Democrat who runs for office in the new city.

It is the American way of life to involve its citizens in government, whether it be as constituents or as candidates, and Daar is threatening that way of life with his despotic orders. If this is what the Democratic Party is nowadays, I have no recourse but to reregister Republican. At least they are neutral on this issue.
