A federal judge has set a September 2003 trial date for Carolyn Condit’s $10-million libel suit against the National Enquirer.

U.S. District Judge Oliver W. Wanger said lawyers will meet May 14, 2003, to discuss whether the lawsuit can be settled out of court. If not, the trial is slated for Sept. 30, he said.

The wife of U.S. Rep. Gary Condit sued the tabloid in February after it published headlines on its Web site and its Aug. 7, 2001, front page that said: “Cops: Condit’s Wife Attacked Chandra.”

Carolyn Condit said she never met slain intern Chandra Levy, and Washington police have said the report was false. Levy’s skeletal remains were found May 22 in a Washington, D.C., park, and her death was ruled a homicide.
