Pay Now or Pay Later
Re “Uribe Widens War on Rebels,” Aug. 13: The new president of Colombia, Alvaro Uribe, has decided to raise “new taxes to pay for more soldiers and police.” This should be taken as a warning by our infamous 1%--the wealthy, the principal beneficiaries of the recent tax cuts: Pay now or pay later.
It is unfortunate that the leaders of Colombia did not raise taxes earlier to support teachers, doctors and farmers to find solutions. If they had, they would not need so many soldiers and police to fight the problems.
