Kashmiri Separatists to Meet With Premier
A group of private mediators ended a three-day visit to the Indian-held section of Kashmir after persuading separatists to meet with Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee but failing to get them to participate in regional elections.
After the talks, Kashmir’s main separatist group reiterated its determination to boycott elections in September and October in Jammu and Kashmir, India’s only Muslim-majority state. The All Party Hurriyat Conference has refused to field candidates in the past, claiming that votes were rigged against it.
