Police Union Lists Qualities of Chief

From Times Staff Reports

The union representing more than 8,000 Los Angeles police officers has laid out the qualities and views it would like the city’s next police chief to have.

In letters to police commissioners, who are screening applicants, and Mayor James K. Hahn, who will select the chief, the Los Angeles Police Protective League said members want a leader who will fight to add officers and will support community policing. The chief should realize the importance of officers’ morale and be “a good listener [who] is not afraid to admit when he or she is wrong,” union President Mitzi Grasso wrote.

The Police Protective League has not endorsed a candidate for chief.
