From Times Staff Reports

The gunman and driver in a drive-by slaying Sunday night had carjacked their vehicle half an hour before the attack, police disclosed Thursday.

The victim of what police Capt. Julie Nelson called a pointless crime was Manuolevao Stibbie, 22, of Los Angeles, who aspired to be an elementary school teacher. Police said Stibbie and five companions were driving home on 223rd Street when, without words or any altercation, a gunman in the carjacked sports utility vehicle fired several times. Stibbie died at the scene.

Nelson asked anyone with information to call Det. Chris Merlo at (310) 548-2833.
